Reuniting After the Pandemic: Global Citizenship Convention 2022 in Jena

After the Covid-19 pandemic struck, paralyzing mobility across the globe, the Melton Foundation community had not gathered in person on a global platform since the Global Citizenship Conference in Bangalore, back in September 2019.

That changed in October 2022, when Fellows, partners, and friends of the Foundation came together in Jena, Germany, for the Global Citizenship Convention (GCC) 2022. The primary motive of this convention was simple yet profound: to bring the community together again under the umbrella of the Melton Foundation’s new Global Citizenship Impact Model.

To mark this milestone, the Convention embraced the theme “Connect, Empower, Transform”, drawing inspiration from the four pillars of the Impact Model: self-development, co-creation, global thinking, and innovative action.

Settling In and Warming Up

As Fellows arrived in Jena, they were welcomed and assisted with check-in at the Alpha One Hostel, where Patty from the organizing team made sure everything ran smoothly. For those who reached early and were ready to shake off their travel fatigue, an informal evening at Philomensa offered the perfect chance to hang out, grab a warm dinner, and ease into the convention’s rhythm.

The official activities kicked off with an energizer session hosted by Damian Soto and Anoushka Mongia, designed to break the ice and test teamwork in a playful way. With music, pens, strings, and paper in the mix, Fellows quickly learned how to collaborate creatively while also getting to know each other better.

Exploring Jena the Melton Way

The heart of global citizenship lies in connecting with local contexts, and participants got to do exactly that through a Stadtrallye scavenger hunt across Jena. Guided by clues and fueled by curiosity, teams explored the city’s cultural and historical landmarks without relying on phones — instead, engaging directly with locals when they needed help. It was both a playful competition and a meaningful way to immerse in Jena’s spirit. The fastest team, of course, earned a special goodie bag, but the real reward was in the shared laughter and discovery along the way. Hosts Nikita Divekar and Sonali Keshwa Murti ensured the experience combined learning with fun.

Tackling Global Challenges: Workshops & Dialogues

One of the most impactful segments of the Global Citizenship Convention was the series of workshops and dialogues that brought pressing global issues into the room for collective exploration. These sessions were not only about learning but about reimagining possibilities through collaboration, empathy, and action.

Trust Through Transparent Communication
Honesty and openness often stand as fragile foundations in today’s interconnected world. In this workshop, participants unpacked how alienation and misunderstanding grow when communication is filtered through mistrust. Through interactive exercises, they reflected on the role of transparency in building sustainable relationships, whether between individuals, communities, or institutions. The dialogue highlighted that trust is not a given, but something consciously nurtured through courage and clarity.

Power, Privilege, Progress

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) became more than just concepts during this session, they became personal reflections. Fellows and guests explored their own positions of power and privilege, learning how these dynamics play out in daily life and within global systems. The conversations were at times uncomfortable, but necessary. The takeaway was clear: progress toward equity requires continuous self-awareness, accountability, and an active redistribution of voice and opportunity.

Climate Resilience & Planetary Health
As the climate crisis accelerates, the call for resilience has never been louder. This workshop shifted the lens from fear to action. Participants brainstormed practical, community-based strategies that can strengthen planetary health, from climate-smart agriculture to cross-border cooperation. The session reinforced that the fight for climate justice is not the responsibility of a few but a shared global mission.

Tech4Development
Technology can either deepen divides or bridge them. This session focused on the “digital divide,” highlighting how unequal access to innovation perpetuates exclusion. Participants discussed pathways to leverage tech for inclusive growth, from open-source tools to grassroots innovations that meet communities where they are. Rather than seeing technology as a distant solution, the group reframed it as a partner in human-centered development.

Simulation: The Climate Oasis

In this roleplay simulation, the room transformed into a miniature world stage. Delegates stepped into the shoes of policymakers, activists, and stakeholders negotiating a global crisis. With competing interests at play, the simulation exposed the real-world challenges of international diplomacy: compromise, negotiation, and the ever-present tension between national agendas and collective survival. Many participants described it as one of the most eye-opening experiences of the Convention, offering a visceral sense of the urgency and complexity behind climate negotiations.

Project Fair: Showcasing SDG-driven Initiatives

The Convention’s Project Fair provided a platform for Fellows and partners to showcase the initiatives they are leading across the globe. Each project tied into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), turning abstract aspirations into tangible action. From grassroots education programs to social enterprises and environmental campaigns, the Fair celebrated the creativity and determination of young changemakers. Beyond presentations, it sparked peer-to-peer learning and potential collaborations, reminding everyone that systemic change is possible when ideas are shared and networks are activated.

Deepening Connections Through Dialogue

Building trust was another cornerstone of the convention. In a session led by Leo Schwarz and Matthias Libuda, participants explored the theme of “Trust Through Transparent Communication.” Against the backdrop of a global crisis of communication and rising social alienation, this session offered a practical deep-dive into authentic dialogue. Fellows engaged in exercises that challenged them to be honest with themselves and with others, creating moments of vulnerability that turned into strength. This hands-on approach connected directly to the Inner Development Goals, emphasizing the personal growth needed to build healthier, more sustainable communities.

Dance, Culture, and Joy

No global gathering is complete without music and movement. To celebrate cultural exchange, Sagheer Ahmad led a high-energy Bhangra session, inviting participants to connect with Punjabi culture through dance. With thumping beats and quick tutorials, Fellows found themselves laughing, sweating, and sharing the joy of movement. What started as an energizer quickly became a celebration of togetherness, breaking down barriers through rhythm and collective expression.

A Space for Renewal and Transformation

Each activity at the Global Citizenship Convention 2022 in Jena, whether it was playful, reflective, or cultural  served a larger purpose: to reconnect after years of distance, to empower individuals to step into new roles, and to transform collective vision into action. The convention wasn’t just a return to in-person meetings; it was a renewal of commitment to the Melton Foundation’s values of global citizenship.

By the time Fellows left Jena, they carried with them not only memories of scavenger hunts and dance steps but also a stronger sense of community, trust, and shared purpose. The convention embodied its theme: Connect, Empower, Transform and laid the foundation for future collaborations rooted in the Global Citizenship Impact Model.
