We are thrilled to announce the launch of the SDG Innovation Challenge 2024, a virtual, pan-African innovation platform aimed at empowering young Africans (aged 16-35) to develop sustainable solutions for grassroots challenges. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and focuses on driving social impact across the continent.
Applications opened between August 10-31, and we received over 700+ team submissions. After a rigorous selection process that evaluated eligibility, project quality, and alignment with challenge criteria, 50 top teams have been selected to participate in this year’s challenge!
From September 12-14, 2024, these teams will come together for the 5th edition of the SDG Innovation Challenge, organized by Melton Foundation Africa. Under the theme “Propel Youth-Led Innovations for Sustainable Development”, this year’s challenge promises to ignite transformative ideas that tackle some of Africa’s most pressing issues while contributing to the achievement of the SDGs.

Key Focus Areas:
Embracing Bold Innovation:
The 50 participating teams bring forward bold, creative, and practical solutions that challenge conventional thinking. Their projects will address one or more of the 17 SDGs, covering key issues such as energy and carbon reduction, water, sanitation & hygiene, health & well-being, education, food security, and more.
Collaboration and Inclusivity:
Participants will collaborate not only within their teams but across boundaries, ensuring that their solutions benefit local communities, especially those that are marginalized or underserved. The solutions must demonstrate broad usefulness and be scalable for wider application.
Evidence of Impact:
Every selected team has already demonstrated clear evidence of how their innovation will deliver measurable results. Teams will undergo a rigorous evaluation process, ensuring their solutions have the potential to create significant and lasting impacts on the chosen SDGs.

Since its inception, the SDG Innovation Challenge has been a vital platform for young innovators to test, refine, and scale impactful solutions that can transform Africa. Previous editions have showcased groundbreaking projects tackling critical challenges, such as alternative clean energy solutions, improving access to education, promoting gender equality, and building climate resilience.
