#LeaveNoChildBehind: Melton Fellow’s Community Library Renovation Campaign
Melton Fellow Claris Nadini is running a fundraiser with the goal to renovate the community library in Mukuru Kwa Reuben, a community in Nairobi, Kenya. She aims for students to be able to access learning materials uninterrupted, and is advancing towards creating access to Quality Education (UN-SDG4) with the help of the Badili Zone Organisation, a non-profit organization based in Kenya that upholds education.
In Claris’s own words:
The Mukuru Kwa Reuben community has more than 18 schools but only two of them have almost adequately equipped libraries which the rest of the schools do not have access to. This, among other factors, is the bitter reality of the experience of the students who live in vulnerable places such as the slums. Badili Zone aims to change this narrative. We aim to provide sustainable solutions that ensure all students form the slum have access to quality education.
As part of our work, late last year, we officially launched a community library in Mukuru Community where the students access learning materials, get mentored, access sanitary pads, and take part in other activities that facilitate their personal growth and development.
Recently, we have been faced with a flooding tragedy where when it rains, the water floods the place. The flooding has been a challenge that has led to some books being spoilt by the water and current students cannot access the facility which beats the purpose of having the community library. We consulted an expert and who has a pre-understanding of the place and he explained that the permanent solution would be raising the floor and using waterproof cement at the end to finish the floor.
The hardest thing that we had to do was looking at a student’s face while telling them that they cannot access the library because it has flooded. It has been very heartbreaking, and we are looking forward to sorting this issue once and for all.
As a Junior Ashesi University student and a new Melton Fellow, I’m co-organizing this campaign. The main objective of this fundraising is for the renovation of the community library to prevent the library from flooding, an activity that needs 300,000 Kenya Shillings, an equivalent of approximately 2,815 USD. Goal to be raised: 2815 USD – Become part of the movement to provide young children the education they truly deserve. No amount is small when donated with an intent to make the world a better place.
