The Gotha Research Centre focuses on the history of culture and knowledge in the modern era. Its research encompasses not only elaborate forms of knowledge—such as philosophy, scholarship, natural history, and arcane knowledge, particularly in relation to the prehistory of the modern humanities and cultural studies—but also practical forms of knowledge. These include knowledge shaped by institutions (e.g., administrative, state, and legal knowledge) as well as experience-based or everyday knowledge, often referred to as “tacit knowledge.”
The Centre places a strong epistemological emphasis on knowledge production, exploring the practices through which knowledge is generated and structured. In addition to studying textual traditions, the Gotha Research Centre also investigates pictorial knowledge—found in emblematic representations, graphics, or maps—and pays particular attention to objects and collections as material repositories of knowledge.
