The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the world of work, education, and social interaction. While AI presents enormous opportunities for innovation and efficiency, it also poses a serious risk of deepening existing inequalities. Marginalized groups such as women, people from under-resourced communities, individuals with disabilities, or those marginalized by caste and class are particularly vulnerable to being left behind if they are not given early, inclusive access to digital and AI literacy.

According to (OXFAM), over 90% of jobs globally now require some level of digital literacy, yet in many countries, less than 30% of low-income students have access to digital skills education. In India, while the technology sector continues to boom, only 18% of rural students report having access to basic computer training,  and girls are even less likely than boys to receive STEM-focused education. This digital divide means that millions risk exclusion from the future of work, where AI and automation are becoming increasingly dominant.

The challenge involves both access and the deeper issues of equity and inclusion. Most AI and tech curricula are designed for privileged groups, often ignoring the intersecting barriers of poverty, gender, disability, and cultural exclusion. To create an equitable digital future, education systems must embed intersectional approaches, ensuring that the most marginalized are not once again left behind in the next technological revolution.

The Edcetera with Satyam: AI & Equity Project

The Edcetera with Satyam: AI & Equity initiative, led by Melton Senior Fellow Satyam, was developed within the Melton Foundation’s Global Citizenship Learning Program to address the urgent need for equitable access to AI and technology education. While AI is rapidly transforming industries and economies, access to quality tech education remains highly unequal particularly in under-resourced schools. According to UNESCO, over 244 million children and youth are out of school globally, with digital exclusion disproportionately affecting students from marginalized communities. In India alone, the Digital India report (2022) highlights that fewer than 30% of rural households have access to the internet, underscoring the gaps that projects like this aim to bridge.

The project focuses on three interconnected objectives. First, identifying gaps by researching where existing AI and tech literacy programs fail marginalized groups, particularly those disadvantaged by caste, class, gender, or disability. Second, researching best practices by studying equitable education models worldwide from AI literacy programs in Africa to UNESCO’s AI Competency Framework for Students to understand what works in diverse contexts. Finally, the team is developing a framework for an inclusive curriculum that goes beyond technical skills to embed ethical, critical, and intersectional perspectives. This means designing a learning model that introduces coding, data, and AI basics while also encouraging students to reflect on bias, fairness, and the social implications of technology.

Ultimately, the ‘Edcetera’  project seeks to create a scalable and empowering curriculum that prepares under-resourced learners to participate meaningfully in the digital economy, while also equipping them with the critical thinking required to shape AI ethically. By centering voices from marginalized communities, the project ensures that the future of AI is technologically advanced while remaining just, inclusive, and humane.

Insights from the Visit to Eine Welt Netzwerk Thüringen (EWNT)

As part of their immersive learning experience, participants visited Eine Welt Netzwerk Thüringen (EWNT), a dynamic organization based in Erfurt, Germany, that fosters global citizenship, intercultural dialogue, and education for social change. From the moment participants arrived, the space encouraged open exchange, comfortable seating, coffee, tea, and snacks created a welcoming atmosphere where discussion and reflection flowed naturally. This informal setting set the stage for participants to engage deeply with EWNT’s staff and programs, asking questions, sharing perspectives, and exploring parallels with their own work.

Although EWNT does not focus on AI or technology education directly, its approach to equity, inclusion, and participatory learning offered valuable lessons for the Edcetera project. The organization emphasizes horizontal learning, where participants and facilitators learn from each other, breaking down traditional hierarchies and creating a space for all voices to be heard. Its programs also highlight intercultural dialogue, helping young people navigate differences, challenge stereotypes, and develop empathy. For the ‘Edcetera’ team, these insights reinforced the importance of designing tech education that is accessible, inclusive, and socially aware, ensuring that students can critically engage with content while respecting diverse perspectives and experiences.

During the visit, participants reflected on how these principles could translate into their own curriculum design. They explored ways to integrate collaborative learning, storytelling, and peer-to-peer exchange into AI and technology modules, ensuring that lessons foster creativity, critical thinking, and ethical awareness alongside technical skills. The EWNT visit underscored that effective education extends beyond information delivery; it cultivates confidence, empathy, and agency, all of which are crucial for creating equitable tech programs for under-resourced communities.

EWNT: Fostering Equality and Collaboration Through Education

Eine Welt Netzwerk Thüringen (EWNT) has established itself as a pioneer in educational and intercultural initiatives that promote equity, inclusion, and global citizenship. Their work spans multiple programs and methodologies, all designed to empower learners and encourage collaboration across diverse contexts. One of their flagship initiatives, “Chat der Welt,” connects young people from different countries in structured dialogues, fostering intercultural understanding, empathy, and a sense of global solidarity. Through this program, participants exchange ideas and reflect on their own cultural assumptions, learning to engage respectfully with difference.

EWNT’s approach is deeply rooted in creative and participatory learning. From workshops to performances, their projects encourage students to lead with imagination, artistic expression, and problem-solving. By allowing learners to actively shape the content and outcomes of educational activities, EWNT ensures that education is co-created rather than imposed, echoing the principles of equitable and inclusive learning. Teachers and facilitators engage with students on equal footing, dismantling hierarchical structures and giving learners ownership of their own educational journey. This approach is highly relevant to designing AI and technology education that is inclusive and empowering.

A key innovation in EWNT’s approach is the ‘Collaboratorum’ platform, an open-source digital space that supports international collaboration. The platform integrates real-time chat, news updates, calendar coordination, multimedia sharing, and project-based learning spaces, creating a virtual environment that mirrors EWNT’s commitment to horizontal, collaborative work. According to Managing Director Franziska Weiland, collaborative work is more productive than hierarchical work, reflecting the belief that shared agency and mutual support generate deeper learning and engagement. The platform also aligns with the Contact Hypothesis in social psychology, which suggests that structured intercultural interactions reduce prejudice and foster empathy, demonstrating how digital tools can actively support social inclusion.

EWNT’s Digital Coordinator, Carola Wlodarski, captured the ethos succinctly: “Open software is also digital empowerment. We may not change lives overnight, but we can change mindsets, and that is where a movement begins.”

For the Edcetera project, EWNT’s work offers both inspiration and practical insights. By combining technology, collaboration, and participatory learning,The organization shows how digital platforms can be designed to deliver content while empowering learners, nurturing creativity, and building social agency. Participants from our Global Citizenship Learning Program took away lessons on how equitable design, co-creation, and intercultural dialogue can shape projects that are both educationally effective and socially transformative.

Lessons from the Visit: Bridging AI, Equity, and Collaboration

The visit to EWNT offered participants of the Edcetera project valuable insights into how equity and inclusion can be embedded into digital and AI curricula. One key lesson was the importance of equality in learning spaces. Just as EWNT dismantles hierarchies between teachers and students, AI education must create environments where marginalized learners feel empowered to ask questions, take initiative, and experiment without fear of failure.

Global and creative collaboration emerged as another important takeaway. EWNT’s Collaborator platform illustrates how digital tools can connect learners across borders, fostering dialogue, teamwork, and creative problem-solving. Similarly, AI curricula should encourage technical skill development alongside cross-cultural exchange, project-based learning, and collaborative innovation.

Participants also reflected on the significance of mindset shifts as an indicator of impact. Both EWNT and the Edcetera project demonstrate that success is measured not just by technical knowledge gained but by changes in curiosity, empathy, critical thinking, and confidence. EWNT’s participant-centered, flexible approach inspired the team to consider methods that make AI and tech education in under-resourced schools more engaging, participatory, and empowering for students.

As one participant reflected, “Observing how EWNT fosters learning environments where each voice is valued made me understand that technology education extends beyond skill development; it cultivates confidence and agency among those often excluded.”

The ‘Edcetera’: AI & Equity project addresses the pressing challenge of ensuring that the AI revolution does not deepen existing inequalities. Both initiatives highlight that building equitable futures requires more than technology; it requires intentional human connection, inclusive design, and a commitment to shared growth.

Outcomes of  ‘Edcetera’: AI and Equity 

The ‘Edcetera’: AI and Equity initiative created a meaningful foundation for accessible and community-driven AI literacy. Each component of the project contributed to building confidence, understanding, and curiosity among learners and educators who often remain excluded from conversations about emerging technologies. 

As the team reflected:
“This project showed how global teamwork can create real local impact. It strengthened our understanding that global citizenship is about collaboration, shared responsibility, and making learning accessible to everyone.”

An Inclusive and Accessible AI Curriculum for Young Learners

A Youth-Friendly Digital Interface that Brings AI Concepts to Life

The project team built a prototype interface designed to make AI learning approachable for students who are encountering these ideas for the first time. The interface emphasizes clarity, simplicity, and exploration.

  • An interactive space where learners examine common ideas about AI and explore explanations written in accessible language

  • Visual cues and simple navigation that help younger learners grasp unfamiliar concepts without feeling overwhelmed

  • A flexible design that allows learners to move at their own pace, supporting individual reflection and experimentation

Pilot Implementation Across Four Schools in Bangalore

The curriculum and the digital interface were tested with high school learners across four schools in Bangalore. The pilot reached 81 students and created space for young people to experience hands-on AI learning in a structured and supportive environment.

  • Completion of the introductory module on fairness, where students examined how biased decisions occur in AI

  • Engaging participation in two activities: a Real vs AI Image challenge and an AI Myths Quiz built using the project’s digital interface

  • Strong evidence of increased digital skepticism as students practiced identifying manipulated images and misleading information

  • Greater awareness among learners of how AI shapes daily life, which allowed them to discuss responsibility, ethics, and the influence of technology

  • Teacher feedback that highlighted how the activities helped students articulate their thoughts with more clarity and confidence

A Community-Rooted Outreach Strategy for Long-Term Adoption

To ensure the project continues beyond the initial pilot, the team developed an outreach plan grounded in collaboration, accessibility, and sustained educator support.

The initiative produced an adaptable curriculum, a learner-friendly digital interface, an engaging multi-school pilot in Bangalore, an outreach framework rooted in equity, and public content that deepens collective understanding. Together, these outcomes create a strong foundation for the next chapter of the project, where more young people can explore AI in ways that reflect their realities, questions, and potential.
