The Urgency of Addressing Violence in Education

In LAC, violence in educational settings remains a widespread challenge, ranging from gender-based violence to the perpetuation of hate speech. These issues undermine the core purpose of education as a safe space for learning and personal growth. During the conference, Ronny Chavez of Fundación Semilla shared innovative approaches to tackling gender violence in classrooms. His toolkit of interactive games provides educators with practical strategies to nurture respect, understanding, and collective harmony among students.

Chavez’s presentation also highlighted the delicate balance between recognizing shared global values and respecting local contexts. Acknowledging these tensions is critical for designing effective interventions that resonate with diverse communities.

Romina Kasman of UNESCO San José delivered a compelling keynote on the role of education in preventing hate speech. While the conference achieved success in its logistical execution, Lars Dietzel observed an area for improvement: fostering interpersonal connections among participants. Without tools like participant lists or icebreaker activities, networking opportunities were limited, and conversations among attendees were sparse. Strengthening these connections could have amplified collaborative energy, creating a more engaging and cohesive experience.

As an active member of the Red de Educación para la Ciudadanía Mundial en América Latina y el Caribean (RED ECM LAC), the Melton Foundation plays a pivotal role in advancing global citizenship education in the region. Since joining the network in 2021, the Foundation has supported initiatives that bridge cultural divides, foster intercultural dialogue, and promote inclusive education.

At the Bogotá conference, discussions on evolving the RED ECM LAC into a more dynamic and impactful network aligned with the Foundation’s mission of creating systemic change through collaborative efforts.
