Artificial Intelligence (AI) has swiftly moved from futuristic concept to everyday reality, dramatically transforming how we learn, work, and address global challenges. From diagnosing diseases to optimizing climate models, AI expands human potential, but alongside these benefits come complex risks: algorithmic bias, deep-fakes that erode trust, significant environmental costs of high-performance computing, and ethical quandaries in how tech is developed and deployed. To lead effectively in this evolving landscape, tomorrow’s leaders need more than curiosity, they require hands-on skills, ethical awareness, critical thinking, and collaboration.

At the 2025 Global Citizenship Convention (GCC) in Jena, the Global Citizenship Learning Program (GCLP) guided participants through immersive, experiential learning sessions. Learners engaged with real-world AI tools, wrestled with societal and ethical implications of emerging tech, and explored the intersection of AI with governance, sustainability, and inclusive development.

Why AI Literacy Matters for Young Leaders

Widespread Adoption of AI

Across industries, the adoption of artificial intelligence has become mainstream, signaling a major shift in the global economy and workforce. According to recent reports, 78% of global companies now use AI in at least one business function, a leap from 55% just a year ago (McKinsey & Company, Stanford HAI). Moreover, 71% of organizations report regularly using generative AI tools like ChatGPT in at least one area of their business, underscoring how rapidly generative models are moving from experimental use to operational necessity (McKinsey & Company, Exploding Topics). Projections indicate that over 90% of companies are either already using or actively exploring AI adoption, confirming that AI integration is no longer a competitive advantage but an inevitability (Exploding Topics).

Enhancing Innovation, Efficiency & Decision-Making

Beyond adoption numbers, the impact of AI literacy on organizational performance is measurable and transformative. Studies show that companies with strong AI literacy and integration capabilities achieve a 6–10% increase in revenue and up to a 40% boost in productivity, alongside enhanced creative problem solving across teams (Global Knowledge). These gains underscore that AI is not simply about automating tasks but also about unlocking new levels of innovation and efficiency.

Many enterprises are transitioning from the experimental phase into broader implementation. Nearly half of Fortune 1000 companies have already fully integrated AI into their workflows and product pipelines, signaling a shift from testing to operational reliance (AP News). However, the process is far from complete, only 5% of organizations report that AI has fully transformed a business domain, highlighting that while AI adoption is widespread, its full potential remains untapped (The Wall Street Journal).

Navigating Risks: Trust, Ethics, and Governance

Looking ahead, a joint outlook from PwC and Capgemini underscores the stakes. By 2028, AI agents could contribute up to $450 billion in economic value, yet only 2% of organizations globally, and just 1% in the UK, are positioned to scale deployment effectively (TechRadar). This gap reveals not only lost potential but also the urgent need for leaders who can align technological innovation with organizational capacity and social responsibility. Furthermore, a LinkedIn–MIT survey reports that many professionals feel overwhelmed by the pace of AI change, with more than one-third of U.S. executives now planning to include AI skills as a core factor in hiring and performance evaluations (Axios). For young leaders, this signals a future where AI literacy is not optional but essential, a baseline competency for employability, governance, and global citizenship.

“Tech in Our Hands”: Experiential Learning at GCLP 2025

The flagship AI session, “Tech in Our Hands,” hosted by senior Melton Fellow trainers Arun Josephraj from India and Hannah Zhou from China, embodied GCLP’s commitment to experiential, learner-centered education by moving away from traditional lectures and immersing participants in dynamic, real-world simulations. The session began with an engaging icebreaker inspired by Andrew Ng’s analogy that “AI is the new electricity,”  inviting participants to reflect on how artificial intelligence now underpins countless aspects of daily life much like electricity once revolutionized society. Through this reflection, they explored both the potential and the limits of AI, identifying tasks they would confidently delegate to machines alongside those they believed must remain guided by human judgment. This sparked a critical dialogue around trust, ethics, and responsibility in technology use.

Building on this awareness, the facilitators introduced participants to the inner workings of AI, from the basics of word embeddings to the sophistication of large language models (LLMs). Rather than being overwhelmed by technical jargon, participants were guided to understand conceptually how machines process and “understand” language, which helped demystify AI and opened the door for more informed engagement. By combining reflective exercises with conceptual learning, the session cultivated a mindset of critical curiosity: participants not only questioned what AI can do but also wrestled with what AI should do, thereby developing both the literacy and the ethical grounding necessary to navigate an AI-driven future as global citizens.

Hands-On AI Challenges: Creativity Meets Critical Thinking

One of the most engaging components of the session was the Crazy Startup AI Pitch Challenge, where participants were split into teams and tasked with creating bold, imaginative AI-based startup ideas. The challenge pushed them to think beyond conventional applications of artificial intelligence and imagine how it could intersect with human needs, culture, and creativity. Among the standout ideas were DreamWeaver, an AI service that interprets dreams to generate insights and personalized art, and PetTranslate, a playful yet thought-provoking device that could translate pet vocalizations into human language, opening a window into interspecies communication.

The structure of the challenge added another layer of complexity. Two teams acted as AI Architects, using integrated AI tools to design end-to-end solutions, while the other two took on the role of AI Specialists, relying on modular tools to build specific components. This distinction encouraged participants to experience different approaches to AI innovation, from holistic design thinking to focused technical problem-solving. As they experimented with prompt engineering, AI-generated visuals, and text-based outputs, they also had to make strategic choices about which tools best served their creative vision. Platforms such as Gamma, Canva, and Google Slides became collaborative workspaces where ideas took shape and were refined into coherent pitch decks.

The challenge was not only about producing a polished product but also about sharpening essential leadership and communication skills. Participants had to translate highly abstract concepts into clear, persuasive narratives that would resonate with an audience. At the same time, the group dynamics of working in small teams highlighted the importance of role awareness, active listening, and adaptability in collaborative problem-solving. When it came time to present, teams compared their AI-driven outputs with human-driven contributions, sparking a critical conversation on the strengths and limitations of each. Through this process, they gained practical AI tool literacy, learned to balance creativity with strategic communication, and developed the confidence to critically evaluate technology not just as users but as informed, ethical innovators.

AI and Media: Exploring Models and Combating Misinformation

In another engaging session focused on AI and media, hosted by Senior Fellow Shivangi Jain, participants had the opportunity to explore a variety of AI models, each capable of generating text, images, and multimedia content. Rather than simply observing these models, participants actively experimented with them, testing different prompts and configurations to see how outputs varied across platforms. This hands-on approach provided a clear view of the inner workings of AI, illustrating both its capabilities and its limitations. Participants quickly discovered that while AI can produce astonishingly creative and realistic content, it can also misinterpret instructions, produce errors, or create outputs that appear credible but are factually inaccurate.

A central focus of the session was media literacy in an AI-driven world. Participants explored how AI-generated content can be manipulated to produce deepfakes, fake news, and synthetic images that challenge traditional notions of authenticity. They practiced strategies for evaluating credibility, verifying sources, and critically analyzing AI outputs. By comparing outputs from different models, participants learned to recognize subtle cues that distinguish genuine from fabricated content, and they discussed the broader ethical implications of AI in media production and dissemination. These activities sparked rich discussions on responsibility, trust, and the societal impact of AI, emphasizing that critical thinking is as important as technical proficiency when navigating digital information.

The session also emphasized collaboration and peer learning. Participants worked in small groups to test model outputs, debate interpretations, and share insights, which fostered collective problem-solving and encouraged reflection on how different AI tools shape perceptions and communication. Through these exercises, participants developed practical skills in digital verification and learned to approach AI-generated content with a questioning mindset, balancing creativity with critical evaluation.

By the end of the session, participants had not only expanded their technical understanding of AI models but had also cultivated a nuanced perspective on ethical and responsible AI use in media. They left equipped to navigate the challenges of misinformation, critically evaluate content, and harness AI’s creative potential while remaining mindful of its societal implications. This session reinforced the importance of blending innovation with ethics, preparing participants to engage as informed, conscientious global citizens in an increasingly AI-mediated world.

It was eye-opening to see how AI can amplify creativity but also perpetuate biases. This session taught me to approach technology thoughtfully and critically, just as I would approach any decision with global impact.
